The view from Vancouver: on English Bay, two designers create a Mediterranean atmosphere

“SUNSET BOULEVARD!” I remember thinking when I first saw the house back in 1976. Sadly neglected and half-buried in scraggly trees and vines, the Mission Revival structure drew me many times with its sagging “Hollywood” awnings and never a sign of life or change. I monitored it for three years, waiting for a “For Sale” sign. Finally, I wrote a letter to the owner saying that if he ever wanted to sell the house, I would be interested in preserving it and saving it from the massive redevelopment that was sweeping the area of Vancouver on which it was perched. Ten years after that I received a phone call from the original and only owner and the deal was done.

That was five years ago. Today my partner, Brent Beattie, and I have created a Mediterranean-style garden to go with the house’s architecture, complete with pockets of woodland and a large terrace from which to enjoy the spectacular views of Vancouver’s harbor and backdrop of mountains. Because we live in a temperate rain forest where lumber has always been plentiful, most of the larger homes in Vancouver are Tudor style, combining shingles or wooden siding with stucco. Gardens favor rhododendrons and the English border look. Moving into this type of house gave us the opportunity to create an atypical Vancouver garden and to experiment with many plants hailing from warmer climes. Design solutions: planning an entry garden

These days, we ask a front garden to do a lot of different things. It should be welcoming, provide safe and comfortable access to the house, and give an introduction to the style and personality of the house and its owners. In addition, it needs to serve as a buffer zone between the house and the street, provide the owners (if they are dedicated gardeners) with space to plant things, and conform to all state and local building codes. This is asking a great deal, especially you also want the garden to look good all year.

When Anne and David Bauer called me to look at their corner lot on a hillside in Palos Verdes, California, they felt that their front garden did none of these things. The south facing, irregularly shaped space was about 128 feet long and varied from 32 to 48 feet deep. A narrow, cracked concrete pathway sloped directly from the street to the front door, bordered on either side by chopped-back junipers and a small mat of grass. Making matters worse, the path was about six inches above the grade, so that if you slipped off the straight and narrow, you were ankle-deep in leaves and debris. In the rest of the yard, overgrown shrubbery cut off views and access the meter readers had to make annoying detours to do their jobs. To the side of the front door a steep stairway led down to a basement-level parking area. It wasn’t the sort of yard the neighbors write you pointed letters about, but neither was it hospitable, convenient, or entertaining. Instead of trying to repair this fairly conventional approach, we decided to rethink the entire space. Read more about Design solutions: planning an entry garden

Planting a peony

Peonies are one of our most beloved perennials, giving us magnificent blossoms of white, soft pastels, or deepest red in spring and early summer, with a dividend of handsome, compound leaves that remain attractive throughout the season. Peonies are classified in two main groups the well-known herbaceous kinds discussed here, which the completely to the ground in winter, and the less common tree peonies, a shrublike form with persistent woody stems. Peonies are long-lived, reliable, and extremely hardy; in fact, they bloom best in regions with cold winters (USDA Zones 3-7). In milder climates (Zone 8 and the cooler parts of Zone 9), early-blooming varieties flower more consistently than mid- or late-season sorts.

It’s best to plant peonies in fall, when they are dormant. Mail-order and local nurseries offer bare-root divisions during this season.
